When Comfort Food Calls

We all have those days where the thought of commuting downtown for a good meal feels utterly exhausting. That is exactly how I felt last Friday night. I wanted somewhere casual, somewhere close to home, and somewhere that served unapologetically massive portions of comfort food.

Discovering Lazy Lizard

That specific craving led me to Lazy Lizard at Flora Vista in Ang Mo Kio. I visited on a Friday around 7:30 PM, right as the weekend dinner rush was hitting its peak. Tucked away in a quiet residential stretch, the restaurant immediately surprised me with its lively, buzzing energy.

The Ambience

Wide-angle interior shot at eye level of a modern casual restaurant dining area with metal chairs, wooden tables, hanging pendant lights, and large glass windows.

Walking in, the space feels like a classic, rustic sports bar. You will notice plenty of warm wood finishes and slightly dim lighting that gives it a very relaxed, neighborhood pub vibe. It was pretty loud inside, with large groups and families talking over the ambient background music. If you prefer a quieter evening, I highly recommend asking for an outdoor alfresco table.

The Food: Appetizers

We started off with the Truffle Fries ($14), which is practically a mandatory order for my friend group. They arrived piping hot and heavily perfumed with a generous truffle aroma that hit the table before the plate did. The fries had a beautifully crispy exterior and a fluffy center, with just enough light seasoning to keep you reaching for more. It is a massive sharing portion, so pace yourself.

Main Courses

Close-up top-down angled shot of glazed barbecue back ribs, served with creamy mashed potatoes, roasted garlic, and vegetables on a white plate.

For the mains, I ordered their famous Baby Back Ribs ($32). This dish completely stole the show. The meat was genuinely fall-off-the-bone tender, easily shredding apart with just a gentle nudge of my fork. It was slathered in a thick, sticky BBQ glaze that perfectly balanced sweet and smoky flavors. The portion was huge, making it an excellent value if you plan to share it with a date.

We also tried the Fish and Chips ($24), which featured a delightfully shatter-crisp batter. Cutting into it revealed flaky, moist white fish that paired perfectly with a squeeze of fresh lemon.

A Missed Note

However, not everything was entirely flawless. We added a Mushroom Aglio Olio ($20) to share, and it lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. It also arrived lukewarm, which suggests the kitchen was definitely feeling the strain of the Friday night dinner rush.

Service and Practical Tips

The service mirrored that busy kitchen energy. The staff were incredibly friendly and approachable, flashing genuine smiles whenever we spoke. But because the restaurant was completely full, they were visibly stretched thin.

We had to actively flag them down to grab a menu and order a second round of drinks. Our mains also took about 35 minutes to arrive. If you visit during peak hours, just settle in and embrace a slower-paced evening.

Practically speaking, expect to spend about $25 to $35 per person for food, and closer to $50 if you are ordering alcohol. Getting there requires a short bus ride from the MRT, but if you drive, parking within the Flora Vista development is generally a breeze. I strongly suggest making a reservation if you plan to visit on a weekend. Otherwise, arrive before 6:30 PM to beat the rush.

The Bottom Line

Lazy Lizard Flora Vista does not pretend to be a fine-dining culinary destination, and that is exactly why it works. It is a highly reliable, value-for-money neighborhood joint that serves up hearty comfort food in a totally unpretentious setting.

Visit for: A casual group dinner, after-work drinks with colleagues, or a relaxed family meal.

Skip if: You're looking for a quiet, romantic date spot or expect quick service during peak hours.
